What's it like having a Flash-free Mac?
-
famously went "Flash-free" on his Mac back in 2010 and many others have followed in his footsteps (see: http://daringfireball.net/2010/11/flash_free_and_cheating_with_google_chrome). Adobe Flash on the Mac is unstable software that's prone to crashes and heavily taxes the CPU (causing heat and subsequent fan noise). See Eliminating Flash from the Mac is therefore reasonable. But is it sustainable? What's that been like in real-world usage, two years later? Is it even easier to go Flash-free now than it was back then? Is it just as problematic and hacky? What does the future hold for Flash-free Macs?

Answer:
I have been Flash-free for over two years, and on the whole, it has been great. Most animated ads are disabled, and Safari never hangs, crashes, or uses large amounts of CPU time. My wife has flash installed on her Mac and has those problems fairly regularly. Like Gruber, I keep Google Chrome installed for times when I need Flash to view something. For me, that ends up being maybe once a month or less. If you use Safari, it is really helpful to enable the Develop menu. To do that, open the Safari preferences, choose the Advanced section, and the check the "Show Develop menu in menu bar" checkbox. Most times, when I go to a site that has a video requiring flash, I just choose the "Develop->User Agent->Safari X.X.X - iPad" menu item. That makes the web site think you are using an iPad, and that almost always enables a non-Flash option for viewing the video. If that doesn't work, then I choose "Develop->Open Page With->Google Chrome" and view it there. The part that is a pain is that removing Flash disables it for all software that uses Apple's WebKit. So many RSS readers, like NetNewsWire or Reeder, which have built-in browsers will also not display Flash content. They do not have a way of pretending to by an iPad, or launching a browser other than the default. In those cases, I either send the page to Instapaper, or copy the URL and paste it into Google Chrome. I have been fascinated to see how more and more sites are no longer requiring Flash. I used to have to go into Chrome once every couple of days. Almost all new web site design us being done without Flash, so it just keeps getting better and better.

I've been "Flash-free" as Gruber defines it since he posted that piece, and prior to that was using Flash blocking tools like ClickToFlash to minimize my exposure. The lack of crashes and heat and fan noise has been well worth it. The inconveniences have been minimal. My largest inconvenience is typically YouTube videos, whether the HTML video support is a little goofy, or a video hasn't yet been encoded. If I ever need to jump into Chrome, I use an Alfred keyboard shortcut to trigger this extension http://www.danielkramer.eu/2011/08/alfred/ , a bit of Applescript that grabs the URL of the foremost tab in Safari and opens it in Chrome. Simple, virtually painless, and I imagine my MacBook Pro smiling back me, fans turning at whisper-quiet sub-2000 rpm.

I use add-ons for Firefox to block flash, and I think the effect is the same. Some addons block even the non visible flash elements like flash cookies. When I want to see a flash video or website I just unblock it for that website or video on Firefox or use Safari for that URL.

I imagine that it would largely depend upon the nature of the user of said Mac; more specifically what apps (web-based, traditional or otherwise) are being used + the nature of the work one does. I, for example, as a designer/developer + architect, have migrated mostly to the cloud to reduce dependency upon any particular machine, OS, environment, etc. For me portability, on-the-go solutions, redundancy + agnostic platforms are most important. This means leveraging a lot of RIAs (rich internet apps) which frees one from the the numerous factors of installation of software, various configurations, proper versions + updates/patches, etc. These may span the gamut from graphics tools to design documentation (standard office-type docs, wireframes, sitemaps, use cases, mindmaps, etc) to unified communication tools for project management, collaboration/commenting, markup, versioning + so forth. This being the case, most of the apps that can do such heavy lifting are built upon the Flash architecture + the alternatives either pale in comparison or simply do not exist. It should also duly be noted that most of these RIAs provide for both Flash + HTML5 output for client viewing (but not authoring due to complexity). As an example, one can take a look at any of the various interfaces for apps such as lucidcharts, mockflow or conceptshare. That being said, Flash-free is just plain silly (+ i don't really have issue with CPU redlining, battery drain or other petty worries usually mentioned in this regard). Of further note, it isn't Flash that is usually the problem but rather the programming of the app - any poorly authored environment can suffer from resource taxing, memory leaks, lack of garbage collection + the whole run of things! Lastly, the inability to view Flash environments for ideas/research (be it for a client, competitors, the landscape, etc) seems to be an act of self-castration. Not only does one miss the boat on visual + aesthetic trends but also the entire aspect of interaction design, motion graphics + interface design for which Flash is known + more than capable.
