I don't really understand when you say "that moves the play along" but all that happens is that Tybolt kills Mercutio. This causes Romeo to get extremely angry making him kill Tybolt once he goes and fights with him. The Capulet Family gets extremely angry at Romeo for killing Tybolt (since he is a relative) making them bann Romeo off of Verona.
