How serious is nasal polyp removal surgery?

Is nasal polyp removal through surgery advisable the second time? Since nasal polyps have a tendency to re-occur, how many times can a patient go for a surgery in his life time?

  • Answer:

I have been an attending ENT doc for 15 years. I have done surgery on a good number of patients (15?) Three times to resect polyps. When done correctly the 1st episode will be the most involved, then further revision work will mainly amount to polyp removal.

Nasal polyps can be a difficult problem, both for patients and the treating otolaryngologist.  Polyps do indeed tend to recur, but thankfully there is no known risk of transformation to a more dangerous tumor.  Knowing this, surgery should be entertained for only one of two reasons. There is a concern because of the appearance of the polyps suggests something more sinister, requiring biopsy. There is obstruction causing symptoms that are troublesome to the patient. If these conditions are not met, then revision surgery is unnecessary. If surgery is required, then it should balance being complete enough to provide adequate resection for symptomatic benefit, and limited enough to minimize trauma and recovery time.  Hope this is helpful!
