What are the characteristics of an unsexy but profitable business?

  • I've been thinking for a while that there are many unsexy but very profitable businesses online.  My main examples are OpenTable, and Email Newsletters. But I guess there are many more that I haven't thought about. When I say unsexy I refer to not being under the bling of media, among other things. Which do u think is a business of this characteristics? best regards, Martin

Hello Martin! Well it's hard to define one trait that unsexy profitable businesses have. As an example of something that is highly profitable and few people know about is the generation, renting and eventually selling of email databases. If you take Latin America for example, there are a lot of companies and people in Europe or the US that are willing to pay about 3 dollars per registry in your database. That is a lot of money, considering that email addresses and name are not a hard thing to get. I am currently working on a couple of projects that I am sure most people would find unsexy. Santiago PS: OpenTable is far from being unsexy, it is getting a lot of publicity in the US and has become a market leader that everyone recognises as the must-go-to site for online reservations.
