How do cellphones calculate heart rate?

How do I calculate my top heart rate?

  • When running, how do I calculate my top heart rate? Also, why does it matter?

  • Answer:

There are a bunch of different formulas by different clinics and experts, but here's the basic one. To calculate your maximum age-related heart rate (HR), subtract your age from 220. If you're 25 => 220 – 25 = 195   195 is your max age-related HR Again assuming you're 25, for moderate intensity activity, your HR should be between 50% and 70% of 195. You can do the math - it's good for you.  For vigorous activity, your HR should be between 70% and 85% of 195. If your HR gets above your maximum age-related heart rate, your muscles will begin to burn sugar for energy instead of oxygen. You lose the benefits of exercise when you get to that threshold, and if you stay above it for too long you could suffer injury. That's why it's important to stay in the range.
