How do I identify the target market or niche market of a product?
-
I'm new to market research. Is there any way or resource to find out the marketing strategy of a product? Specifically, I'm looking to identify the target market of SaaS products like Evernote, Springpad, Asana, Trello, Yammer, etc. For some products I also want to know their niche market and how they find that niche.

Answer:
There are specific strategies most companies employ to identify niche markets - much of it is theory and test because frequently the theory market turns out to be at least somewhat different from the actual niche market. Overall you would actually get real world user/prospective user feedback. For you personally, as a starting point: 1. Look at who already uses each of these products. For companies like Asana it's companies and groups. Then work backwards. 2. Think how you would use each product or how specific working friends might. What would incline you or your friends to use this product? What want/need is it servicing? 3. Actually use the product and intuitively understand what's missing or what could be done better. Obviously when you do this, any of your theories would then need research mileage (if you plan to develop anything). 4. Working out yourself what would be, say, Asanas strategy yourself by doing the above before getting the direct answer will aid you. Instead of looking to be told an answer, you're figuring out solutions above and beyond what the answer is. This at least allows you your own ideas/the power of personal agency. note: Not to dissuade but these markets are fairly saturated (if you do a search for tiny related start-ups). Asana, I believe, just acquired another round of financing.

Here is an article for identifying your target market: http://www.problemio.com/business/target_market.php And here is a video explaining it: Generally there are things like demographics: age, sex, income level, educations, etc. And then there are also psychographics: needs, lifestyle, attitude, interests.
