Many failed products are examples of unsought products?

What are some examples of exceptionally well designed products and devices that failed to gain traction commercially or for other reasons fell to the wayside?

  • This question has come up in my reading of Don Norman's excellent 'The Design of Everyday Things'. I'm interested to see what products that have had noteworthy interfaces / functional designs are not around anymore because they failed commercially.

  • Answer:

Acorn/RiscOS and Psion /EPOC OS and especially the Psion Netbook.  Is still yearn for its leather grip, ease of use and long battery life. Ahhhh!!

Typical examples of this relate to the names of products that are selling well in one country, but which don’t translate well into another language. The Rolls-Royce Silver Mist was an example. ‘Mist’ in German means ‘manure’ so you can imagine the reception that got in Germany. Imagine the scene:Question: “I drive a Bentley. What do you drive?”Answer: “A silver shit.”Also there was another car called the Nova. In Spanish that means ‘won’t go’….The Lucky Strike is another one. The first ad had the strapline ‘You’ll never be alone with a Lucky Strike’ and it featured a lonely man in a bar suddenly being surrounded by women when he lit up a Lucky Strike. It bombed - because no-one wanted to admit they were lonely.Betty Crocker’s Cake Mix didn’t sell at first either. Until they changed it so that the housewife had to put in an egg. As soon as they did that, housewives felt they would not be cheating their kids out of a home-made cake by using a mix - and it flew off the shelves. The Scootie in India didn’t do so well either, I believe, as many women interviewed there were too afraid to go out alone - the very thing it was designed to combat. Again, the emotion of ‘fear’ was not understood. (If the situation has changed, let me know). In aviation there are many examples of strange craft that worked and that will never be made for possibly confidential reasons. My father was called to work on an RAF station somewhere in the middle of England, where they flew experimental aircaft. As he said you had to have an exceptionally calm hand to be able to function doing the ATC for these aircraft as so much could go wrong, so I guess that’s why he was asked to do it. He would not speak any further about what he was involved in.In terms of products that are advertised, calls to purchase - and advertising - have to address emotions first and logic later. You are lucky if you get a branding agency that gets this.If you want any more examples, you could do a Google search and literally hundreds, if not, thousands of hilarious (and sad examples) would come up as branding people do not always do their homework and I am sure that many companies lost a lot of money and good standing as a result.
