Why do business school professors seem to make more money than other professors?

  • So I looked up the UC Salary database for the salaries of my professors (from UC Berkeley)  and it seems almost everybody in the highest salary range are from our business school (haas). Why is this so?

    For the same reason that the football coach is the top-paid employee and medical center surgery department chairs (for universities with hospitals, unlike UC Berkeley) are also extremely well paid: whoever brings the most dollars into the school will be compensated commensurate their ability to generate that revenue. MBA programs are big business, particularly at UC Berkeley Haas, which has a total enrollment of ~1,300 students across its full-time MBA, evening and weekend MBA, and executive MBA programs [1]. Even if you figure each of those students is paying only half of the yearly $50K in tuition in fees, and you ignore alumni donations and undergraduate tuition, the school would still be bringing in $33M in revenue. A few extra hundred thousand dollars to lure top faculty, which will enrich the student (a.k.a., future donor) experience and aid in marketing and recruiting versus its rival schools, is probably a worthwhile investment. Also a supply and demand issue. There is a shortage of most business fields (fewer qualified phds than positions) and a glut in many fields outside the professional schools, hence they need to compete to get the best people and pay more.
