How do you create a resume that targets designer jobs?
-
I have been self-teaching myself design for a while, as suggested by and her article , and have a portfolio of work from freelance projects I've conducted, but I'm not sure how to write my resume to target design jobs.

Answer:
If that is your only design experience, you state you have worked freelance for as long as you have worked freelance + arbitrary amount of time. You make this a good story. This is what you then use as experience, allied to your portfolio. You then use keywords associated with design & design technology in your skills and personal statement, so that the scraping software used by recruiters picks it up/HR departments retain it in an interview pile. You don't dick around fancifying your CV, you make it clean and concise and easy for a human and a computer to read. I make no assumptions re your skill level: if you are genuinely good (or even just average) and you are confident and authoritative in person, you'll get offered jobs, which will build your CV etc etc.

Resumes are not what they used to be anymore, especially for a graphic designer. Since you have some pieces that you have freelanced in the past, you will need to build on that. Make your own website and upload those images onto your site. I use http://wix.com because it is free and it takes little time to set it up, the only thing is that they will run an advert at the bottom of your site- nothing that wont effect your digital presence. My site (http://samsmom12000.wix.com/angela-johnson) focuses on my profile picture, small introduction and three buttons that take you from "my resume" to "my portfolio" to "contact information". Once "published" you can submit that url to any prospective employer. Best of Luck!

Make sure your resume is designer worthy but clean so that its easy to read. Get an online portfolio like behance, and list your works in there. Keywords are important as well, make sure those are included in your resume. It's best that you have a LinkedIn profile as well.
