How do i source wikipedia in a bibliography?

What justifies Quora's use of Wikipedia as a main source?

  • I've been taught all through schooling not to trust Wikipedia without taking it with a grain of salt, and I've seen first hand what can happen if you do use it. Being a wiki, Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and therefore I've found it contains many mistakes. My only idea would be that Wikipedia covers such a wide range of topics, you can find pretty much anything on the site. But I think the official site for a topic, if it exists, should be taken as truth over Wikipedia if they should ever conflict. "You cannot trust everything you read on the internet."

  • Answer:

Quora defers to Wikipedia's conventions when there's a disagreement on how topics should be organized and named. It's not used as an official "source of truth" when cited facts are in disputeĆ¢€”everyone is free to use whatever source they trust and make an argument from there. The community will decide what's convincing and what's not. I can't speak for the company, but I'd guess Wikipedia was chosen because it already had a well-organized ontology that its editors work hard to keep consistent. Questions of naming and such can get pretty messy, so it makes sense to take advantage of the work that's already been done and avoid arguments that others have resolved.
