How to drag and drop a JPanel to another JPanel?

Would you incorporate drag and drop into a website that was meant for consumption by an audience with a wide range of technological knowledge?

  • I want to allow users to select options from a large selection (no way around this - there are a lot of selections, can't pair them down).  To enable easy selection, I want to use drag and drop.  However, many of my potential clients are probably not very technologically savvy, so they may find it confusing, or they may not have browsers that support drag and drop.  How realistic of a concern is this?  Do most people have browsers that support drag and drop?  Do you think such a feature would be confusing to a 50 year old lawyer?  Do you think that double clicking might be a good alternative (the user can either drag the option, or double click it to add it to the list of selections)?  Note, I cannot use single click b/c single click is used for another purpose (i.e. single clicking an option will pull down various sub options - so if single click was also select, users could get very frustrated).

  • Answer:

Drag and drop is cool, but you must always include another way to do the action. For example, an icon that, when clicked on, will offer the same feature in a more traditional way.
