I am a student from Calcutta, India and I applied for transfer admission to some schools this year, and have been accepted at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin. How good is Lawrence for physics and for producing grad school-ready students?

Do students from LU get into top-tier grad schools? I've also applied to Brandeis and Reed, but I do know that they're both fantastic for physics... I have applied to the College of Wooster too, and would love to know how it compares to Lawrence in this context.

Answer:
Lawrence University, a liberal arts college in Appleton, ranks 10th among all four-year colleges and universities in the country that produce, per capita, the most physics PhD's. The rest of the Top 10 list for physics PhD's is: No. 1 California Instutite of Technology, followed by Harvey Mudd College, MIT, Reed College, University of Chicago, Rice, Carleton, Princeton and Harvard. This insight for physics majors was mentioned in The College Solution Blog by higher-ed journalist Lynn O'Shaughnessy. She raises several interesting points in her Thursday blog post about which universities and colleges are the best feeder schools for the nation's PhD programs, per capita. On a per capita basis, for instance, liberal arts colleges produce twice as many students who earn a PhD in science than other institutions. That makes sense since students have more opportunities to work closely with their professors, they can actually learn more due to small class sizes and receive glowing recommendations from their teachers, many of which, graduated from prestigious graduate programs.
