Or does she? She believes that, had he died, she would know. So she goes on an epic quest through France to find the truth. The film is incredibly romantic, terrifyingly dramatic (if only for the hyperrealistic war scenes) and also pretty complicated at first. It helps to take some notes, especially in the beginning, when the five prisoners and their backstories are introduced. Once you're done with this, I seriously recommend the book by Sébastien Japrisot on which this film is based on. It is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. * I take "2000s" to mean 2000-2009. Everything later is 2010s to me.
