How do I do a people search?

How are you using People Search in KISSmetrics?

• What type of information do you take out of People Search? How do you know what parameters to set on people search that will give valuable answers? Do you export and treat People data using any other tools? Can you give actual cases where you segmented your customers through people data and how you read those results?

• Answer:

  I use people search any time we want to grab a cohort of people (to send a relevant email, see how they convert, etc.) or to check and make sure properties I've uploaded have come through (since it takes a couple hours in the system). As far as what parameters to set on people search, sounds cliche, but it really depends on what answers you're looking for, and the key is to setting up events that you know are good indicators. For example, if you want to find which of your users are interested in a certain feature of your product you will want to tag URLs of landing pages associated with that feature, the button that enables, that features, etc. I export People Searches all the time, and often do additional analysis using Excel, so I can break the data down more precisely and cut it different ways. I can't give you a concrete example, because the data is proprietary, but one of the the things I've found most important in reading people searches is selecting the correct versions of the three properties or events I choose to download. For example, we have an event called Registered, and for that event, KISSmetrics gives you the option to display the "Date of First Time Ever", "Date of Last Time Ever", "Date of First Time for Date Range", "Date of Last Time for Date Range", and "Total number of times".
