What is the best ecommerce platform for a B2C small business with less than 25 products?
-
My client is currently using Wordpress but because there are problems with the theme we are considering both WP compatible solutions like woocommerce and ecwid cart. We are also considering all it one ecommerce / CMS solutions like Magento. We have several ecommerce clients that also need to move from their current platforms. All are small businesses with good design plans and we have lots of ecommerce experience.

Answer:
Unless they... ...already have a serious turnover (500K+)... ...have a serious budget for both implementation and marketing... ...need (really need, not just wish for) an integration with backend ERP systems... ...I wouldn't consider Magento for just 25 products. Implementation will be to big and you'll have a platform that is way too powerful for what you probably need. WP doesn't seem too bad. Although I don't have too much experience with it gives you a lot of customizability for a fraction of the cost of a Magento implementation. You could also consider the Magento Go SaaS solution, that'll make an upgrade to Community or Enterprise easier later on.

TL;DR: don't choose Magento, it's too complex for a small shop. Choose Wordpress + Woocommerce or a hosted shopping system like Shopify. If you would like to be flexible in changing the design of the shop now and then, I would not recommend Magento. Especcialy not for smaller shops. We are using Magento for more than 2 jears at our Dutch shop http://Trampolineplezier.nl and I think it is not the best sollution for our shop. Changing the design of the product page for example (apart from the design itself, just implementing the HTML, CSS) costs a lot of extra of work from our programmer because of the complicated structure of the files. I guess Magento is a great solution for large online stores with hundreds of products (the attribute sets are realy nice for example). For smaller shops, I think Wordpress + Woocommerce is a better solution since it makes you more flexible.

Magento is great for more than 500 products. The main problem using Magento as mentioned by others is the learning curve involved not only for the store owner but also for the developers. Also remember that Magento needs high configuration like dedicated servers to run fast else it would be impossible to make the store owners explain why their site is super slow even though they have only 25 products. Woocommerce is a best option. I am also checking Prestashop at the moment which is super quick on shared hosting. Give them an option like shopify, bigcommerce and volusion as well.

I will show you three choices and their pros and cons. 1. Web hosting: suitable for those who have litlle idea about programming, wanna sell things online only. However, customization of your website is almost impossible if you wanna customize. 2. Hire a web designer: can customize but cost is the main problem 3. Use open source base (like Magento, , OpenCart, PrestaShop): Some are free but need programming. So, after considering your situation, my advice is that you should use a webhosting like Shopify. It will save your time and energy! Hope it's useful for you!
