How can I make a concise, attention-grabbing demo/teaser video for my startup?
-
My startup is going live in a few months, and our team wants to create a video to generate hype regarding our launch and to give us something to forward to people that might be interested in our website. Our target market (in a broad sense) is teenagers interested in music, so we want to create something that captures interest while being concise enough to not induce boredom. I want to avoid "explainer videos" because making one that's unique from the others could be costly/time-consuming and it's not the type of video we want to create for our audience. Plus, we have very little money. We're looking for a video that shows what the site does, synced up to music, in ~30 seconds. I was thinking of using a screen recorder to create a teaser of the various features of our site and editing the video myself (as I have moderate video editing experience), but I'm not entirely confident in my ability to produce a professional-quality result. What is our best option? Should I attempt to create the video myself? If so, what should I be focusing on to make it appealing to the target market in terms of the video's style?

I'd say hire someone. At http://www.breadnbeyond.com - we create awesome explainer video for less than what you spend to live one month in San Francisco Bay Area. Here's the kind of video that you will get from us: Disclaimer: I own http://breadnbeyond.com

If you can't afford a company like ours (http://www.gisteo.com), consider hiring a talented freelancer on elance. There are a lot of styles to consider, not all have to be a "typical" cartoon-style explainer. Something like this one we recently did for a Swiss-based music company could be an interesting style to consider:

From what you are saying, it seems like your site has quite a lot of features worth highlighting, so you would want to showcase what your company does, and how it does it. You can do that by creating a demo video presenting your features within a device, like a laptop, or desktop computer in which your website would totally steal the show; maybe even a mobile device with hand gesture interaction. Take a look at the demo video templates available for only $99 at http://placeit.net/, there are tons of options that can appeal to a teenage audience. About the length, 30 seconds sounds like a good timing according to this graph. http://demoduck.com/2014/05/how-long-should-my-explainer-video-be/ To create a video that will generate true hype among teenage kids, adding music will definitely do the trick. By using this demo video tool, with one button you get access to +150k music tracks to add to your video on YouTube.
