What is metadata?

Typography: What is the best way to edit a font's metadata on a mac?

  • I have this font family that will not load all the weights because the metadata is wrong. Is there an easy way to edit this information so once fixed the applications can display the whole family?

  • Answer:

Most likely the cheapest and easiest route is to contact the font maker. If that doesn't work or is not an option...? So, first the disclaimer: as previously noted, with commercial fonts any such modifications are often or even likely violations of the end user license agreement. Full on font editors are kind of overkill for this purpose, in my opinion. Although there are some free tools that could be used to fix the problem, such as TTX/FontTools, they require some expertise in font metadata to use safely. Folks like me or Adam Twardoch or John Hudson can literally do an entire talk/presentation on the topic of font names and family groupings and how they are represented in fonts. The best largely automatic tool for this purpose is FontLab TransType 4. It distills the wisdom of the experts and offers a truly elegant visual interface. But if you don't have other uses for it, it may be overkill for a one-time issue like this.

Your option is a fully fledged type design application like Fontlab Studio, Robofont, Glyphs, or Glyphs Mini. But most likely, any opening (and changing) of any kind of font data will be illegal per the EULA. I don’t know of too many foundries that allow for this – mine being one of the very few who allow for it. Your best bet is always to email the foundry.
