In order to understand how emotional intelligence can help you in a concrete situation, you need to know what helpful is. Then you need to know what emotional intelligence is. In order to know what emotional intelligence is, you need to know what intelligence is. Intelligence is not knowledge; it is aptitude for acquiring knowledge and applying that understanding in constructive ways. The notion of something being "constructive" is relative, and so not really concrete/absolute. Emotional intelligence should then be thought of as an aptitude for understanding emotions, both your own and those of others empathically, and applying that understanding in ways that you and/or others perceive as constructive. It all depends on your perspective. I have a theory: a concrete example of emotional intelligence can be broken down into four parts: 1. Perception 2. Intention 3. Action 4. Result E.g., you might sense implicit tension, frustration or belligerence in someone's voice or body language as they talk to you about something that may not seem to warrant tenseness or frustration (Perception). You empathize and form an intent to diffuse or disarm the other person because you see disarmament as a constructive outcome (Intention). You apply this intent with choice specific, concrete actions (Action), the outcome of which is the Result, which may or may not be in harmony with your intent. Only when all four of these aspects are harmoniously effective can the responsible agent be seen to have acted with emotional intelligence. However, this "harmony" and "effectiveness" is completely subjective and depends on your perspective. That said, it seems clear to me that being able to affect positive outcomes harmonious with your intentions would be helpful if you have faith that your intentions are indeed helpful to yourself.
