What is supply chain management?

What's the best introduction to supply chain management?

  • I'm interested in getting a general overview of supply chain management and don't know where to start. I'm reading some articles on the supply chain management in China for a project on a vastly unrelated field, and want to have enough of an overview to contextualize them. I have no background in business management whatsoever. What book or article would be a good introduction to current thinking in the field?

    I highly recommend "Designing and Managing the Supply Chain". The book presents building block theories that can be applied across various industries. It's used by many MBA programs around the world and I believe there is a Chinese edition as well. Anyway, I think it's better to use English (International) Edition so you can familiarize yourself with many scm terms. I once was liberal arts student myself and I found that there was no problem to study this book at all. So you can be sure this is something suitable for you.

Apart from reading books and articles, a good way to understand the concepts and appreciate the challenges involved in SCM would be to roll up your sleeves and put yourself in the shoes of an SCM manager. One way to do that in a risk free environment is by using simulations.
