What is it like to hire a business coach or executive coach? Would you recommend it?
-
Looking through the answers in several Quora topics related to coaching, I get the impression that most enthusiastic accounts of the value of business coaching or executive coaching have been written by users who are currently offering coaching services. Of course, one would expect members of the coaching profession to eat their own dogfood and praise its deliciousness. Furthermore, being on the receiving end of coaching is part of most coaching trainings and certification programs, so professional coaches are more likely than other people to have experienced coaching as clients. Nevertheless, there must be some (former) coaching clients who are not part of the coaching profession. I would like to hear from those non-coaches what their experience as a coaching client was like. What did you expect from the coaching when you first hired your business coach or executive coach, and what did you actually get out of it? How many coaching sessions did you pay for during how many weeks or months? Was it worth the time and the money you spent? Would you recommend someone in the same situation to hire a business coach or executive coach? This question is not about consulting. It focuses on client experiences with business coaching or executive coaching. At one company I worked for, they provided coaching to executives who had issues--communications issues, planning issues, management issues. It all depended on the executive. Each executive had different experiences with their respective coaches. Those that respected their coach actually reported learning something from them. Those that didn't respect the process thought it was a waste. I worked with one senior level exec who didn't understand how to work with his coach. The coach needed to train him. But once he got the hang of it, I saw him grow in communications capability. He was much easier to work with on larger projects and seemed more open to his staff's capabilities. He actually asked me back to assist him improve his presentations and ultimately had me work, as a communications expert, with his staff. His coach showed him how other disciplines meshed with his. So as a corporate communications expert, I respect the coaching process.
