Why are russians so good at programming?

Why is it that students from China, Russia and US are very good in Mathematics and algorithmic programming?

  • The last 10 year trends in International Mathematical Olympiads and the ACM ICPC and other programming competitions have shown these countries performing exceptionally well. Why is that ?

    These countries have diverse and enormous talent everywhere. It's also a fact that these countries invest in the development of such talented students not in view of prizes but, yes as youth development. Ex: Titu Andreescu, Zhuming Feng and many other extra-ordinary teachers have been harboured  in the States for the IMOs. Talking of the ICPCs and other programming contests- the universities have a rigorous CSE programme which emphasizes on core algorithmic programming and mathematics. The students work real hard and have a personal zeal in such fields. Not to mention even India is pretty good and has achieved a lot in both Maths and Coding competitions. We have the IITs which come up with the brightest and the best every year (There are others, but IITs top the list). Besides the student force in India is also one of the brightest and talented and probably THE MOST focused. It's just that sometimes talent goes unnoticed. In general the whole success factor just boils down to intelligence, passion for the subject and nurturing it through practice and training.
