Why and how was Quora transformed into a hub of intelligent and sensible answers, unlike other forums, such as Yahoo Answers?

I don't understand the strategy Quora-makers have used to make this site a place where you can expect a very intelligent, sensible, thorough answers for every question unlike Yahoo or other forums where people write all types of craps as an answer. The only thing I could notice was the weightage put on asking the question instead of answering. But I doubt that this could be the only strategic thing done for that purpose.

Answer:
This is a fairly egotistical answer, since it's really about how Quora keeps me working to provide very intelligent, sensible, thorough answers answers".Quora provides me with excellent feedback - notifications of upvotes and views (and, in the past, Quora credits). There's also notification of comments that others have made on my answers and the opportunity to respond to those comments. Sometimes these lead to interesting and stimulating conversations. And Quora does a really good job of controlling the order in which answers appear beneath a question. The best answers (very intelligent, sensible, thorough answers") are at or near the top and the less helpful answers are near the bottom. So, if I see an interesting question and look at its answers, I'm likely to learn something interesting and maybe even helpful. And I pretty quickly notice that some people write a lot of good answers. And I follow them and see even more good answers that they write.I don't know how Quora controls the answer order. Upvotes are only part of the ranking. Views are only a part. Quora has its own version of PeopleRank that it uses. If there's a "secret sauce" at explains Quora's success, I think it's their version of PeopleRank.See lots of Quora questions about PeopleRank andhttps://www.deepdyve.com/lp/institute-of-electrical-and-electronics-engineers/interest-aware-peoplerank-towards-effective-social-based-opportunistic-DT3MKG3poi

I think there is some connection between the level of discourse and a certain amount of "peer group-policing" - for want of a better term.I, for example, have some spelling and punctuation issues - so when I see a question with spelling errors or capitalization mistakes, I try to correct them without changing the thrust of the question.Whenever I come across a question, comment or response that is clearly anti-Semitic or racist, I immediately report it to Quora Moderation. I also do the same thing when I come across something that has clearly been submitted by someone who I know has been banned from Quora and is using a "sock puppet" or fake identity to come back on Quora to post the same things they have previously been banned for writing.I am not alone in these actions - and collectively we have, in those ways, kept Quora to a higher level. Unfortunately, we have to be constantly collectively vigilant to keep it that way.

From day 1, Quora has focussed on quality. They forced people to write quality, set the bar and marketed themselves as such. They have been very good at saying what you can and can't write. They also enforce their policies and do it with an iron fist. No other site can match Quora in this. Due to high quality, Quora has risen up above other sites with relative ease. This isn't something easy to do. The internet is a savage place. Quora has gotten lucky however, and they have a site that focusses on building knowledge and being respectful to differing viewpoints. This is very nice to have and it has drawn many people to Quora.

Quora was 'seeded' with people from top rateds schools; people well respected in the venture capital and startup field; and their friends. It had a number of designs to foster expertise to foster a friendly community. Yahoo answers was seeded with random people who had yahoo email and used yahoo search. When you start with high quality people you get high quality results it attracts other high quality people. When you start with random people you get random results.
