What do international students do after graduation?
-
I'm from Asia, and have studied in Australia for about 3 years. I've never felt really "at home" here, which has little to do with the local environment but rather with my introversion. I'm majoring in a field that regrettably will not be something I want to pursuit further in the future. I've instead found another area which I'm both interested in and intend to turn into my career. This change of heart will require at least 3 to 5 years to be realized, however. I have one and a half year left before graduation, and I start to be concerned about my future (it's late, I know). The biggest issue for me now is whether to try staying, or to go back, or to look for opportunities elsewhere. Each option has its own prospects and risks, the full spectrum of which at this point I can't possibly understand. So, to the other international students out there who were once in my position, what influenced your decision regarding what to do after graduation? Are there anything you would do differently?

I'm from South Korea and am currently studying in the US. I will be graduating in May and have decided to stay here afterwards to work for an American company. I have actually talked and worked with several international students in the past and I hope my insight will be able to help you. From my experience, there seems to be three main options for us international students. #1 the most common path seems to be going back to their home countries after graduation. This is mainly for two reasons. One is because they never really felt "at home" and missed their home country. The other reason is because they couldn't find a job in the US (or wherever they are studying) and they had no choice but to go back home to try to find a job. #2 they extend their stay in the country they are studying in by going to graduate school to get their Masters or PhD. This allows them to get a higher degree, which potentially gives them a better chance to look for a job. The only downside of this is that you are spending more time in school (and money), especially if you're not that interested in pursuing that degree. #3 They are able to stay in the country by getting a job. I am going to admit finding a job as an international student is not easy, but it can be done. Try to track down which companies are willing to sponsor international students. Then, see how you can develop your skills and build your network to become an attractive candidate for that company. I had to go through over 20 different interviews and attend numerous networking and recruiting events to finally land my job. I tried to share my experience through my book (http://www.amazon.com/Blueprint-Roadmap-Landing-International-ebook/dp/B00ENU0E4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377497999&sr=1-1&keywords=the+blueprint+international+student). As you mentioned, first try to figure out what you want to do. Do you enjoy living in Australia (and the Western culture)? Or would you rather go back home? If you enjoy Australia, what type of career or job would you like to pursue there? Once you figure that out, try to research and write down what you have to accomplish to get that job.
