How To Colonize In Galactic Empires?

What were the ten most evil empires in history?

  • And why? Please explain reasoning, genocides and why they are in the order they are in. So, to start off, here's my rough list. 1. Nazi Empire. This one is obvious. Holocaust against Jews and Slavic peoples on purely ideological grounds. 2. Stalin's Russia. The sheer number of people killed. The Ukrainian famine of 1933 which killed 5-7 million 3. Ottoman Empire. Armenian genocide was one of the first modern genocides in history. 1-1.5 million murdered. 4. Japanese Empire. Treatment of Korea and Chinese. Comfort women, rape of Nanking 5. Cambodia and Pol Pot. 2 million+ dead due to his Stalin-esque programme (which didn't seem to have succeeded like Stalin's) 6. Mao's China. Great leap forward, cultural revolution, millions killed. (worse implemented than Stalin). Pol Pot is worse because Mao at least was a freedom fighter for China during the war and he unified the country. 7. Roman Empire. Despite many merits, had a habit of deporting troublesome minorities from their homelands, ultimately ruling by fear. 8. Aztec Empire. Human sacrifice, subjugation of surrounding groups. 9. British Empire. Due to the large and diverse posseessions, often was repressing indigenous groups, from the Irish to the Mau Mau rebels. DIdn't appear to have explicit genocidal policies like other empires, but settler encroachment effectively meant loss of life for indigenous groups. 10. American Empire. The institution of slavery was terrible, but slavery was more prevalent in South America and was an inheritance from the British. Like the British, westward expansion by settlers inevitably meant natives would be killed in clashes. Did defeat Nazi Germany and later the Soviet Union, but in the process was the first country to use atomic weapons on civilian populations and conducted large scale bombings of cities. Often installed dictatorships in other countries. Vietnam war was not done in order to gain resources, like other empires, but was fought on ideological grounds, but still massive loss of life. Other empires that didn't make the list but are worth considering - Spanish Empire. - French Empire. Both behaved in a similar fashion to the British, but since they were far less successful, don't make the cut. My primary motivation is actually sussing out how the British and American empires compared to other empires in history.

I'd rank them:   1. Mongol-deaths of @10% of humanity. 2. Manchu (brutal genocide in its conquests and crushing the Taiping Rebellion.) 3. Soviet 4. China under Mao 5. British- genocides vs Natives, Australian Aboriginals, Tasmanians, Kenyans, several manmade famines in India that killed over 10 million. 6. Nazi 7. Japanese militarists 8. Belgian- King Leopold's genocide in the Congo. 9. Tamurlane- deaths of 5% of humanity. 10. China under Chiang Kai shek- killed 10 million of his own people.   This is certainly not to make light of the horrors committed by Pol Pot, the Armenian genocide, or Roman atrocities. If one were to continue the numbering based on death tolls, they all wind up in the teens of these rankings.   As for the Aztecs, their atrocities have been incredibly exaggerated, first by the Spaniards and ever since, often by one person after another trying to justify or excuse conquest. The claimed death tolls get as ludicrous as supposedly a quarter million a year. The capital city had half a million people. Where would they get, or even put, those killed?   The actual accurate estimates we have are 300-600 Aztec sacrifices a year, less than the number put to death by the death penalty for some nations. And most of them were volunteers. One can be appalled by both sacrifice and the belief sacrifice was necessary. (Really, how different is it from believing the death penalty reduces crime? Most evidence we have shows the opposite.) But the Aztec state doesn't deserve to even be in the top 100. Not only the Spaniards, but also Mexican dictator Porfirio Diaz have far worse records.   The US ranking would have to add up deaths from slavery and the slave trade, genocide vs Natives in the Trail of Tears, California Indian genocide, and extermination of the buffalo, atrocities in the Philippines War, targeting Axis civilians in WWII, North Koreans killed by chemical warfare (napalm), atrocities in Vietnam, carpet bombing Cambodia by Nixon, Reagan's support for genocide in Guatemala, and aggression in Iraq. I'd say the US winds up in the teens in these rankings also.   The French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonial empires likely wind up in the teens in these rankings also from brutal conquests and the slave trade.

Hello there. The most evil empire in modern history would have to be Soviet Russia. Stalin starved millions and millions of his own people in Ukraine, and had millions more thrown in Gulags, jail, murdered or they simply disappeared. After his purges of the Russian army, there were no qualified officers left, which led to Russia being absolutely demolished in the first part of the war against Germany. If Russia had good leadership in the army at the time of the German invasion, they would have defeated the Germans for good in early 1943, and saved two and a half more years of unnecessary blood shed. He was a true tyrant and the fact that the west allied with him in WW2, is an embarrassment to all those who live in the west today.
