Android App Testing. How many Android device you test your app?
-
Hi, Currently we are building a web app which also needs an Android App. We are getting ready with everything to build our own first Android app. One thing which i don't understand is, how am i going to make sure that my app will work on all Android phones. There are 1000's of android phones out there. So, my question is, how you test your android app? I am planning to buy 7 android devices of different software & hardware specs and screen sizes (3 to 7 inches). We also aware of emulators. Is this enough? Or i need to do anything else? It will be great if you share how you handle testing. Thank you

Answer:
Make sure you test on different OS versions and possibly screen sizes. 7 Should be enough and pick the one that are most used.

If you are willing to test on your own, I'd combine both emulators and real devices. First emulators, and for refinement and UX testing - real ones. Using only emulators would give you little feedback on user experience, for example. As for devices, if you do all the testing on them, it will be extremely time- and resource-consuming. Maybe it would be cheaper and easier to outsource the whole testing process to a web agency like http://Utest.com or http://testlab4apps.com or any other - there are a lot of them out here. I like the idea of delegating testing to third-party guys, that way you'll get: - more objective view at your app - a more structured testing process with quite a high quality reporting - a wider range of apps used for testing - most likely you won't be able to buy as many, as those agencies have.
