Formula for Calculating Tensile Stress?

What is the formula for calculating stress on a cantilever?

  • Answer:

What is a cantilever? Here's a picture. We attach a rigid beam at point A but leave it hanging at point B. When stress is applied, there is some sort of deflection, but it varies based on how the load is distributed (uniformly? all at one end?) Since you don't specify how the load is distributed, I'd rather not go crack open a Mechanical Engineering book and look up the different stresses for the different loads. See: http://www.codecogs.com/library/engineering/materials/beams/cantilever-beams.php. Note that: lll is the length of the cantilever beam xxx is the length to the bend WWWis the weight or the load on the beam ZZZ is the elastic modulus defined as IyIy\frac{I}{y} with III the moment of inertia and yyy being half of the beam's height (I believe)
