How mobile app developers take their 3G network load testing to extremes?

    To find out optimal users you need approximate visitors statistics. You should devide hits per day / 86400 to get hits per second, better double it as such calculation is not so accurate. If it's equal to 3.55 hits/s you should load your backend server with 100 concurrent users, if 18.07 hits/per second then 500 users, if 20 hits/s then 1000 users. During debugging you can run tests from your desktop if you want simulate network speed I recommend use Blazemeter. It provides possibility to simulate the use of mobile networks which includes 3G-good, 3G-normal, 3G-poor simulations.  About tools - if you need free solution you can use JMeter and if commercial then I recommend Loadrunner. Both of tools support recording features so it will be easy to generate your load script. More detailed information you can find in another question:
