How can I download free medical articles and papers?

The authors of the papers typically have rights for publication on their own servers.  As such, many researchers will upload their papers to a private webpage, enabling open access.  The simplest way to find these would be to perform a search for the paper title or author and append "filetype:pdf" to the search terms.

Go to the government website http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed (known as PubMed). Enter your search term, such as "cancer." When the result list appears, select "free full text available" from the left side menu. Now the list will show only free, accessible articles. Pubmed also has a useful link describing other ways to gain access to articles: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK3827/#pubmedhelp.How_to_Get_the_Journ. For example, if you have any affiliation with a school, library or other institution or even business, you may be able to access articles via that organization.

http://www.plosmedicine.org/ is completely open-access. Another thing you can do, sometimes, is find a university with good journal subscriptions and take an online class there.  This can get you a lot of resources relatively cheaply.

Most specialties if not all belong to some kind of group or society that represents them and serves as a connection hub to keep all practitioners up to date, organize conferences and education programs, credentialing...etcThere are also journals you can subscribe to, few are free but most would require some kind of affiliation to the medical practice field.
