Which is the best human indexed search engine?

  • There are search engine like Google where crawler or spider does the job. Are there any search engines where humans do the indexing? If yes - which is the best tool in this category?

    blekko is an example of a search engine which uses human curation to improve results, on top of a conventional algorithmic search engine. Humans can't index the whole web, but a large fraction of search engine queries result in 10 results from a very limited set of websites. That limited set can be reasonably chosen by humans. As an example, there are many bad places which have highly ranked answers to health queries... do you want to trust someone hired through Mechanical Turk for 50 cents per article for health advice? No. You want your answers from doctors at the Mayo Clinic, even though the Mayo Clinic's organic rank isn't very good.

I think you're referring to Directories (what Yahoo used to be all about back in the early days). Humans simply cannot do what Google does (breaking billions of documents into their words and then indexing them) and there's really no advantage in doing it manually. On the other hand, curated directories where you basically have a tree of categories and a list of top quality sites in each category - that's something humans are able to do. Take a look at http://dmoz.org, it's one of the better known directories, community edited and an internet veteran on its own.
