What is an "ethical consumer?

What are some one-time use consumer software products?

  • I was thinking about the consumer space, and realized that most products create value from on-going consumer loyalty.  Even for iterations you have to buy every year like Turbotax, people continue to use a product for a specific continuing purpose over a certain customer retention lifespan.  For example, in the consumer finance space, people use http://Mint.com, and that user base only grows as more people use it as fewer people drop off. Are there any examples of consumer software products that are only used for a certain time frame and then never used again?  It seems like there's not a clear answer to this.  I don't see a consumer product for things like college admissions, is it because the one-time nature of the problem doesn't make it worthwhile?

  • Answer:

There are products in the education space that are considered "a one time use". For example, for elementary school: math, basic reading, etc.  For high-school, SAT prep-tests, SAT vocabulary apps,  and AP study guides.  There are also e-based study guides for Law bar exams, the patent bar, and other professional engineering exams. One of the most popular one-time use software is also on-line software for driver's education (mandatory before you take your driver's permit) and for traffic school.  Price of course depends on market size.  For driver's ed, it can be $30-60 dollars, but for bar exams, the cost can be in the thousands.
