Evolutionary Psychology: Why do men find big sunglasses on women attractive?
-
I've just finished reading Jena Pincott's book on evolutionary psychology 'Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes' and was wondering what the psychology behind men finding women attractive when they wear big sunglasses. My hypothesis is that it is an exaggeration of dilated pupils (something men find attractive in women), but this is strange because no human eyes are that big. Thanks!

Answer:
In my own experience as a young woman, big sunglasses work as a curious tool. It protects me from unsolicited and unwanted advancement from those freakish "loser" men, while it gets me more appreciation from attractive men. I started putting on dark big glasses as I walk into places like Walmart, as I realized they effectively prevent the loser guys from approaching me. Of course a cringe on my face would achieve the same effect, but losers are usually quite unaware themselves and would never get close enough see me cringe :) . So in that case, my sunglasses are but just a more civil way of giving the finger. And they work like a charm! Curiously, though, I also noticed they get me more attention and smiles from young, attractive, refined men. I did know from my own research that there is strong correlation between general sexual attractiveness and a projection of inner power, or confidence/dynamism. Generally, people describe an "intimidation" effect associated with big dark sunglasses, as in the prison guard experiment. My speculation is that the psychological effect created by sunglasses is not exactly intimidation but a power statement. While this power intimidates the majority of what I call "losers of humanity" :) , it sort of creates an intuitive recognition in those who have this sense of power within themselves. If that be the case, that would exactly be a means for "natural selection." However, the shapes of sunglasses matter a lot. If it's a small, rounded pair, it is saying either "I am blind" or "I can never be taken seriously." :)) If it is an outrageous colored, light tinted pair on a girl, it is saying "I may have a dog in my purse."

Could it be that men associate large sunglasses with some form of attractiveness. For instance when I think of sunglasses I think of the beach. Maybe some men think of sunglasses as some attractive apparel. I think it is an association complex. Like a dog seeing a leash, immediatly the dog thinks that it is going for a walk, our brain groups two items together to find an ideal result.
