How do I implement a chat system using PHP and Javascript?

  • It would help if you can suggest decent existing libraries or open source projects that i can just use. I am also open to implementing it using node.js

    You can use redis' pub/sub as a bridge between clients. Php has an awesome redis client in Predis.

node.js would fit better for developing a chat system than PHP. node is especially good with building network applications. this is because node's non-blocking I/O. Check http://socket.io/, you can find a complete exmaple here: https://github.com/amirrajan/nodejs-chat. Using node.js based chat server will allow you working on the client and the server application with the same language. If you're thinking going with PHP anyway, check this project http://reactphp.org/, provides non-blocking I/O for PHP.
