What was the name of the cultish self-help book/group that used to run ads in the back of Popular Science?
-
As recently as five or ten years ago a group used to run the same full-page ad in the back of seemingly every Popular Science (it might have been Popular Mechanics) for a book that, because of their ad, looked for all the world like a cult manual or something. The letter talking about it was written by the (long-dead) author of the book's disciple, a woman. (There were pictures of bothâthe man looked more like a 50s banker than a guru.) Some years ago I looked them up and found them to look more like a self-help group than anythingâthey had a website with the book in PDF form. Now I've forgotten the name of the groupâwhen I check on newsstands they appear to be goneâand I'd like to know it again. Does anyone remember these ads and the name of the group who bought them? If someone gets to that quickly I'd also love to hear who they were targeting that read Popular Science and whether anyone ever tried to follow their tenets, which wereâif I remember rightâwillpower-based.

Answer:
Would you perhaps be referring to "Rosicrucians"? I have no idea why I suddenly remembered that name but now that I think of it, I remember those bizarre ads . . . something to do with a pyramid or a spaceship . . . I never understood that and there was no Internet and I couldn't look them up. I'm sure that's to whom you're referring.

Answer, for my own benefit (since I've rediscovered and forgotten about this twice and always remember I wrote a Quora question about it): Richard W. Wetherill, who founded the Alpha Publishing House and something called Humanetics.
