Why is it called Xbox 360?

  • Why is the Xbox 360 called the Xbox 360?

  • Answer:

My recollection was that the PS2 was out already. We couldn't just call it Xbox 2, it had to be something that implied it surpassed ps2. Also Xbox 360 was being positioned as more than a game device. It was a living room appliance. I think 360 implied a broad circle of functionality. The reality is that these names get chosen because ultimately someone in charge needs to pick a name. I recall the original Xbox code name was kept because no  one liked what marketing came up with. The x in Xbox stood for Directx, the team at Microsoft where many of the founders originated

As I recall  (I was leaving or had just left Microsoft), they needed to separate the brand from traditional version numbering. The internal codename was Xenon, which was great as a Top Secret project name for game developers, but not something that played well with consumers. During this time, the UX, HW and Branding guys were converging on a circle to illustrate the status of the box around the On button. This as well as an edict from upper management to find a term that described a paradigm shift led to the idea of "360" being proposed as the new Xbox brand title. This played well internally as the term 360 meshed with that concept and the idea of this being a revolution in living room console design. Generally as these things happen, it was a confluence of events and so the ordering is fuzzy.
