Why are we not seeing many B2C tech companies in India that develop solutions in IndianĀ vernacular languages?
-
There is a large population in India that is very comfortable with their local languages and they are getting tech. savvy by the day. Why don't we see many companies that develop solutions around proven ideas in the B2C tech space , but offer them in vernacular languages instead of primarily in English only ?

Answer:
This is quite intuitive in my opinion: a majority of Indian internet users, and almost all users who are early adopters for new products, usually do speak English. The problem is that translating a site into another language is not the simplest task because you have to worry about translating things like "Sign Up" and "Connect", and about things like how the design will look with different languages, some of which can be wordier than others. In any case, once you look past English, each individual language only has a very small piece of the overall pie and this would mean that you have to translate the site into many languages before you can see as many users as you can see from English alone. I do imagine that as more people get more comfortable with the Internet, companies get larger or the potential to make revenue per user increases, sites will do this a lot more. We can already see companies like Facebook and Google translating heavily, because for them growth is really important and resources are not as constrained as smaller companies.
