Where should I do medical volunteering in Africa?

Which Africa country (and volunteering program) should I apply for?

  • I want to do volunteer and experience the life in Africa for a month or so in the summer. I have done some research with Ghana, since a friend of mine did some volunteering work there previously, and found a handful organisations offering volunteering service such as teaching and nursing. But I wonder if Ghana is the best country to go to; it seems pretty well off in my opinion.

  • Answer:

Pretty well off is ver, very relative.  I think Ghana is a great place to go if you haven't spent much time in Africa before.  It's got a vibrant culture, it's safe, the people are friendly.  I spent five months there and loved every minute. They still have a tremendous need for any type of volunteering you'd be interested in doing despite being relatively stable and having a fast growing economy.

Whoever you go with, make sure they are reputable. Here is a good example of the type of things a volunteer sending organisation should tell you, and ask you: http://www.volunteeringoptions.org/ And then you could read up on the pros and cons of volunteering abroad: http://pear.ly/bs5gj

Peace Corps in West Africa.  I served in Togo for 2 years and it was life changing.  Highly recommend, and 2 years isn't really that long in the grand scheme of things.
