How long it should take you to prepare for IELTS?

I am done with my GRE. How should I prepare for the TOEFL? Should I take the IELTS as well?

  • Answer:

If you have recently given the GRE and got a good score (> 315 according to me) you are already  prepared for reading and writing sections. If you have watched Hollywood movies/ TV shows without subtitles, you are ready for listening section. For speaking section you need to practice arranging your thoughts in 30-45 sec and then speaking clearly. Always record your answer and listen to it. Initially you may stumble and stutter but that's OK. Just keep on practicing.   I purchased the Barron's TOEFL book, it has plenty of stuff in it and is more than sufficient for TOEFL test. Good luck P.S.-My score -116

In TOEFL you have to prepare for listening and speaking section. Reading and writing is way easier than GRE. so for listening watching Hollywood movie is suffice ,So if you really wanna know where you stand in TOEFL purchase an ETS TOEFL practice test .Its of 27$ but i can say its the best investment for TOEFL. In listening making notes is very useful. When you will encounter with biology or anthropology lecture ,you will remember all the terms if you make notes.Although the conversation part is very easy in listening section but for lecture part do make notes. Coming to speaking ,its spontaneous .Here you will be given either 15 or 20 seconds. For speaking do practice 3-5 mock test. You can score very high ,if you practice this section a lot and this the section where mostly Indians score a litter lower than other sections. Just do 3 ETS official guide test .Its exactly to TOEFL . ATB i think 2 weeks is enough for preparation. If you have time you can go with Barrons too.

You can opt anyone of those either Toefel or IELTS. Its up to you. With IELTS score u can do M.S in many countries like USA, Canada, Australia, Newzealand,London whereas Toefel is particularly meant For U.S.IELTS is paper based test where as TOEFEL is computer or system based test.Scoring in either of these exams will definitely places you in ambitious universities:-)

Take only one of the two. I would suggest TOEFL. You must have given GRE as a computer based test. TOEFL is also computer based test. So, it wont be very  different and you will feel comfortable. If you are not so good with English, you should join some institute because the marks are very important for admission. Other option is to find a good authentic book of TOEFL and solve it regularly. Try to score above 100. All the best.

GRE and TOEFL are mandatory for admissions into schools in the USA, for a masters degree. Other exams you have listed are used for admission evaluation in different countries such as UK, Australia etc. So, decide on which geography you want to target and take the required exams.

TOEFL is an exam that may not need any separate preparation or training. Given that you have already spent a lot of efforts for the preparation of GRE verbal section, the same will prove useful here. If you have a decent English and read newspapers daily, the only preparation you may require to do is to solve a few practice test papers before you go for the exam.
