How to pursue graphic design and writing career?

What should I expect if I pursue a career in Urban Design?

  • Professionals in the field of Urban Design, I would love to hear from you. What is it you do, exactly, on a daily basis at your work? Do you  work for governments or private companies? What kinds of jobs and tasks  exist within Urban Design? Also: How did you get there? What did you study, how did you train, and how did you find your current job? Background for my question: I have almost finished my degree in  International Business and Economics and I am considering further  education in the area of Urban Design. I love the topic, since it sounds  like a combination of many disciplines I am interested in, such as  design, architecture, and economics. It also seems like a meaningful and  sustainable job, as opposed to many other jobs I could get with my  current degree. I am trying to figure out whether that would be like I  imagine.

  • Answer:

The tasks of an urban designer varies greatly depending on experience and sector. Governmental practice and private practice do have some differences. The responsibilities of an Urban Designer can comprise of the following, not limited to: Administration of Government Plans and policies affecting land use ,zoning ,transportation and housing. Major liaison between architects, engineers, contractors and all other professionals in a project. Most of the time, the urban designer can act as the project manager. In the government, the UD can approve or deny project proposals if not in accordance with local policies. In private practices, UDs are involved mostly on Masterplanning projects- your artistic license will come to play more often,as you will be responsible for the creation of spaces and developing 'visions' for places. You will use your imagination and re-think your environment,in order to create better places to live, work and play. An undergraduate degree in Planning or Architecture will help you master the basics of Urban Design and later on specialise in UD.While pursuing the Architecture degree /Urban Design degree ,you will be assembling a portfolio of work that will later help you in applying a job. A great portfolio is the best bet to get you hired as soon as you finish your education.
