What Are The National Holidays In Australia?

Should we say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons greetings" in Australia if we want to greet a person in Australia?

  • I would like to send a Greeting card for my colleague  in Australia. What should I mentioned in greeting card? "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons greetings"

  • Answer:

Despite what some modern Christians would have you believe, the phrase "Happy Holidays" did not originate as an evil conspiracy by the P.C. police to oppress Christians by denying them complete and total cultural hegemony or whatever. In addition to Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day (which are all big enough to count as separate holidays), there are a plethora of other holidays linked to Christmas: Boxing Day, St. Nicholas Day, the Day of the Epiphany, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Christmas-linked_holidays. There's a reason why there's a song called "The Twelve Days of Christmas". To answer your question, a general "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" is always fine, but if you know your colleague celebrates Christmas, "Merry Christmas" is fine too. Honestly, if a person is going to get snippy with you over saying "Happy Holidays", that's probably not someone you need in your life at all.

Your colleague will be elated just to receive a card from you! But to answer your question, most people send cards which say "Merry Christmas" or "Seasons Greetings" (Quite intuitive you'll say but it is what it is!) like this one - More adventurous people prefer to send cards which depict the Christmas /New Year season but don't say it straightaway, like these ones: 1. 2. 3. And finally, Game of Thrones Fans like to send: Hope this helps!

For God's sake not "Happy Holidays". For one thing, its not an idiom in common use in Australia, so displays some lack of cultural awareness. For a second thing, the expression is widely mocked here as PC gone wild, and anybody who used such a term would be considered a complete wanker. So, unless you want to be seen as a culturally unaware American wanker, avoid "Happy Holidays". Merry Xmas or Seasons Greetings or almost anything else is fine.  Do remember its the middle of summer here, but reindeer etc on cards is also fine.

Most people in Australia are content with Happy or Merry Christmas, followed as appropriate by Happy New Year.  Unless you know they follow a religion which rejects any celebration of Christmas, in which case of course such a greeting would be inappropriate.
