Do Universities offer summer internships/projects in Computational Natural Science field?
-
I am currently doing my masters in Computational Natural Science. I have a bachelors in Computer Science, am sufficiently good in programming and have done sufficient computer Science projects. I am currently working on my master by working on a project that involves studying interactions of molecules with other amino acids (so that you get an idea of projects i have worked on). I have worked with gamess, gaussview, gaussian etc. I wanted to ask what is the scope of this branch ( Computational Biology, molecular modelling, drug design). Do Universities (preferrably in Europe or US ) offer summer projects in these fields and if they do, when should i apply for it? I intend to do the internship in summer of 2014 ?

Answer:
I was A2A. I'll start by saying that I've never heard of such a program, but I haven't worked in a university since 1976. Generally, universities want you to pay money and take courses. An exception would be a big group with a lot of grant money that needs someone to do programming. When I was at the University of Texas, the plasma physics group had a full time programmer writing programs that could be shared by all members of the group. So, ask yourself, who are the most famous computational chemists in the US? Which university is producing the most new PhDs in computational chemistry? Which seems to employ the most post docs? Look up their published papers to find their email addresses. Or go to the university's web site, then the chemistry department's page, then the professor's page. Send out some emails. If you want to try something in computational physics, ask some physics professors at your school these same questions. If you are interested in mechanical, electrical, or fluid flow engineering, contact the leading companies making commercial packages for CAD (computer aided design) and FEM (finite element method). In all these areas, your chances might be better if there's a possibility of you staying to work on a PhD. Good luck.
