buddypress: how do I make the group description excerpt shorter?

How should I organize an online community? Via Facebook Groups, G+ communities or BuddyPress for Wordpress?

• I'm setting up a Wordpress website and needs to have members.  Of course the most logical thing to do would be to make it a Buddypress site, and that's what I was planning. But then I got thinking, do I really need to have the social side of it on the site?  Besides, I'd tried Buddypress earlier this year and got stung with spammers, and it became a nightmare.  This time I've looked into how to make the site safe, but I'm still wondering if that is the best option. Tonight I went to another site which had a community and expected it to be a Buddypress.  However it ended up being a Facebook group which I was already a member of. So that got me thinking.... What about a G+ Community?  I think it is really worthwhile considering... I'd love to have some feedback.... Thanks!

  It depends on whether or not you would like to have control over the data which are created by your community. If you just want to set up a community environment very quickly, then create a group on facebook or G+. If you want to be able to market your community by adding advertisements etc, or if you want more control in general, then build your own platform.
