Are there "American" restaurants overseas? What do they serve?
-
Are there restaurants overseas that specialize in "American" food, the same way we have "Chinese" and "Indian" and "French" restaurants in the U.S.? If so, what do they serve? I don't mean foreign locations of American fast-food chains (although those are interesting too). I mean stand-alone sit-down places that advertise as having "American" cuisine.

Answer:
As you mentioned, there are foreign locations for popular American chains like Taco Bell and Mc Donald's, and in India at least, these restaurants are extremely popular because they give people a taste of what we perceive to be American food, at local prices. These chains are also really clever in that they make the flavors more palatable to the local people. So, for example, we have the chicken mc maharaja in India, which is spicy and really tasty. Also, I remember when Taco Bell opened in Bangalore, India, and crowds were as big as the most popular restaurant you can think of in NYC. Moving on to your actual question, there are some upscale places that advertise and serve American food, typically at five star restaurants, or posh locations in the neighborhood. These places typically serve sizzlers, burgers, fries and sandwiches. There are some specialized places which let you make and eat your own bbq, which also advertise themselves as American restaurants. Pasta and pizza are also considered American. In fact, anything continental passes off as American, at least in India.

We have several American restaurants in Spain. And yes, just as we have "Chinese", "Indian", "Italian" or "French" restaurants, we have "American" restaurants. Apart from American chains (McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Hard Rock, Tony Romas, KFC... - Sadly, Wendy's closed all their restaurants in Spain-) we have other "American" restaurants, owned either by Americans or Spanish. Right now, in Spain we are seeing a boom with American diners decorated in a retro-fashion, and you can find them everywhere you go. (The most famous chain is called Tommy Mel's - http://www.tommymels.com) "American" restaurants are very popular among young people, and their price range is between 20-30 euros per person, which make them not expensive, but not cheap either (McDonald's meal is 5 euros). There you can find: hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, nachos, potato skins, onion rings, milkshakes and wonderful desserts like cookies, brownies, etc. Hope it helps!
