How did Americans respond to internal and external challenges?

How do you respond to information that challenges or contradicts your worldview?

• I'm just curious how people react to information that challenges their beliefs or worldview.  Do you ignore it or try to integrate it into your current beliefs?  Do you go out of your way to encounter information which challenges your worldview, or do you try and avoid it?  I'm asking this with the assumption that every worldview has information which would call it into question, so "It never comes up, because I know the truth." is not a good answer.

• Answer:

  I try to keep a level head about it, but I'm also evaluating A) the nature of the person who offered the opinion -- what his or her background is, why he or she would be offering it in the first place and B) the how factual and plausible it is. If the opinion gets that far, I might consider researching it depending on whether it's of big enough importance for me to do so. Sometimes, though, if it's something that is so absurd or if the person is attempting to discredit my position without evaluating it on their end (or even knowing me at all), I'll blow it off. Listening to people for me now is a hyperactive match of fallacy-spotting. I tend to avoid verbal arguments and generally say a lot less to people than I ever had prior to this year.
