Why does Facebook Paper load from a blank grey template each time it starts?
-
For the regular Facebook iPhone app, there's a cached view or some "color" to make it look like there's something there. But the Facebook paper starts up grey and white, giving it a "not connected to the internet" feel.

Answer:
iOS shows a static image while apps load. The standard is to show a version of the app without content so it looks seamless when the actual app is ready. If you pay attention, all apps do this.
