How does Hollywood make so awesome movies and Bollywood doesn't?
-
I recently watched The Hobbit and Fast Five, and the trailers of Fast and Furious 6, Iron Man 3 and loads of other movies. I truly enjoy watching Hollywood movies. When i am asked about English movies i have watched and liked, i have to count till 150 or so good movies and when asked about Hindi movies, Bollywood, there are a handful of them like A Wednesday or so. And its a trend now to just blindly copy a hollywood movie, Ra.One. was the most stupid movie amongst them. So what i mean by my question is that the we are all humans and it is not the case that all US people have IQ>180 and all Indian people are dumb asses or vice versa. I am not saying that all Hollywood movies are awesome and I am not implying that bollywood should start making Sci-fi movies and action movies only. every bollywood movie contains Love story + songs that's all it contains if you look at hollywood movies except LoTR and a handful of few movies love stories are present in all of them. Batman, Iron Man, Fast and Furious (FF). And hollywood movies are diverse in topics, it is essentially just love story + something else, in FF series it is cars, harry potter its magic, Iron man its the tech so love stories are not dominating in English movies. whereas in Bollywood movies it dominates and there is also no script at all, i don't know why films like Ready (given One star by indian express) are made and how do they earn a 100 Crore or so. so why does it happen? i would like to know your view on it and suggestions are welcome

Answer:
I would disagree that love stories dominate Bollywood. Yes, many movies have love story as the main element, but it is no longer the dominating storyline it used to be in SRK peak era. Based on top grossing movies of 2012, what sells now is cheap comedy (Rowdy Rathore, son of sardaar, bol bachchan, housefull 2), cheap action(+comedy) (ek tha tiger, Dabangg 2), drama (talaash, agneepath, barfi, jab tak hai jaan). Similarly, there are only certain genres which are working well in Hollywood, which are superheros/theirsequels (avengers, dark knight, spiderman), fantasy/animation/their sequels (Hobbit, ice age, madagascar) and drama. Cheap action and cheap comedy sells because majority of Indian market which funds the industry likes it. Most of the money comes from the Hindi speaking rural areas of UP/Bihar/MP/Haryana where the youth wants to see a macho action figure flirting and fighting. Unfortunately, you and me are not the majority and while good and different movies are made in Bollywood for audience like us, they are lesser than the other crap being made. Also, I think you are not watching good Bollywood movies. There were atleast 10 good movies last year I can remember top of my head which were not run of the mill love stories and were awesome (kahaani, paan singh tomar, vicky donor, shanghai, gow 1 and 2, oh my god, english, barfi, talaash) Though Hollywood indeed makes less number of crap movies, but trust me, they have their own good chunk of crap every year, we just don't notice them (look at http://www.wildaboutmovies.com/2012_movies/Movies_In_Theaters_2012.php) . I hope for Bollywood that crap:good ratio will decrease with time.

To rephrase what http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_de_Maistre said Toute nation a le gouvernement et les films qu'elle mérite. which means Every country gets the government and the movies that it deserves. (Please note that this is not the original quote. I have tweaked it.) The problem is our Roadies generation. They seem to like the useless movies that Bollywood keeps on sprouting out week after week. One easy way to sell a movie in India is to simply portray it as if it is the coolest thing or it represents the new generation. Any movie will sell if you stroke the king sized egos of these non-achievers into believing that they are being cool by simply being the way they are - full of attitude! This has led to a large bunch of directors, actors, music directors with either a non-existent IQ or who have realized this formula and are bent on exploting it to the fullest. They will simply make what sells and what sells is not movies like A Wednesday, Udaan, Gulaal, etc.(all of them hardly did well at the box office) but dumbassery of the highest order like Wanted, Ready, Dabang. We get the shower of excrement movies that the majority of the people ask for.

This can be attributed to 1. Reach of Hollywood/English - English is most used language in world. Quite clearly they can have larger audience compared to Indian Bollywood. 2. Public Acceptance - The failure of 'Swades' and the super duper hit 'Bodyguard' are perfect example of what public demands. Masala Films. 3. Budget - 1 USD = 54 Rs. Enough said 4. Sensor Board - Due to sensoring of 'controversial' scene from movies, Producer don't really care much about making them. 5. Hero Worship - Indians love their heroes. They can't stand a villain who hits 'Rajni Sir'. When an actor is larger than the role how can you expect a script driven movie. All this is changing now a days. Lately Hollywood has turned Boring. Its same almost every movie. Aliens attack US, One guy makes the difference and eventually saves the world. Bollywood has taken a new leap. Production houses other than Dharma, Bhutt Camp, Red Chillies have risen. Success of Udaan, Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani, GOW also tells that acceptance of non-massala movies has increased. We have enough reason to be hopeful.

I can't speak in favor or against Bollywood as I've not seen much hindi films, but I can safely assume Kollywood(Tamil films) are almost the same as Bollywood on many levels. Firstly, all Hollywood films are not great, I guess you happened to see only the entertaining ones, majority of their movies suck cos they also copy and repeat the same stuff again and again, The films you mentioned you liked are high budget films and such movies in India are not possible and even when there is a possibilty they are spoilt by stardom and useless script. Also, you have to sympathize with the Indian directors/producers who are trying to make good script and getting a kick at the BO. This happens because of the quality of the viewers, In a country like India where the majority of people are still living in villages and less hip areas tend to like over exaggerated action and item numbers, you can't really blame them it is how the country is. It will take some time to change this. Whats worse is good actors act in these kind of films and viewers who could do with a better script have no choice but to like their fav actors. It is a worrying trend :(

Liking Bollywood movies is not a sign of a low IQ. Bollywood caters to the majority market, which likes such stuff. Such movies is what they have been brought up on and it's a tried-and-tested method for success. The people who like these movies are not stupid in any manner. They just have different tastes. They would understand a hollywood-like movie, just that they would not like it as much. Opinions are orthogonal to intelligence.

What's awesome for you can be crap for anybody else, In India cheap gimmicks are double meaning jokes, item numbers and senseless comedies. In Hollywood, some cheap gimmicks are high quality graphics, stunts, cheesy dialogues. Good movies are being made in India: Udaan, Wasseypur, Khosla ka Ghosla Good movies in Hollywood: perks of being a wallflower, django unchained, departed Bad movies in India: Ready, Ek tha tiger, Rowdy Rathore Bad movies in Hollywood: Meet the spartans, bitch slap, Hannah Montana. Meet the spartans is a very very bad spoof of 300. If you want to watch some good movies in this genre, watch Airplane-1 and 2, Naked gun triology and some movies directed by Mel Brooks like Spaceballs.

Basing on the type of hollywood movies that you've mentioned i.e Hobbit, fast and the furious, iron man, LOTR and batman, i must say that even the Indian directors tried their best to make such 'gripping, ambitious and high tech films' like Drona, Ra.one, love story 2050 :D :D and so on but unfortunately the only highlights of the respective films were the blade, chamak challo and the pink teddy bear. So when all their "hard work " deduces to a dance sequence they give up and brainstorms Dabang, rowdy rathore, SOS and the likes which is "action" packed featuring a lot of gravity defying aerial stunts :D So what i'am trying to say is that in terms of actions movies or movies like Batman and LOTR which has a LOT of high tech effect(which i dont even know) not to forget the money invested, Indian cinema in these areas definitely sucks. BUT if your'e looking for bollywood movies that aren't action packed or as awesome as Batman series and LOTR, i can suggest you to watch dhobi ghat, rang de basanti, kahaani, udaan etc. Dont lose hope in Indian cinema dear friend, i hear Rajnikant is teaming up with bollywood giants to make another ROBOT sequel LOL :D :D

It is the audiences' expectation of a larger than life figure with a macho casanova image that leads to the making of movies likw "dabang", "robot" etc . But its not at al right to say that bollywood is a crap manufcturer . Infact in the last few years, a nmber of movies like 1. A Wednesday 2. Rang de basanti 3. Gulal 4. Gangs of wasseypur 1 and 2 5. English winglish 7. Bhaag milkha bhaag 8. Taare zameen par 9. Dhobi ghaat 10. Barfi Have been made and have done well at the box office . Another fact which I would highlight here is that , you are only notified about the most awaited and best movies of hollywood . They do make shitsome movies which you possibly dont even come to know about . Where as on the other side an indian will possibly go through movies like ready, son of sardar etc .. And these will create an opinion that bollywood only produces crap whilst hollywood movies are totally worth . Scarcely realizing that one never came to know about movies like "the cookout" .. If I compare it , even a total shitass bollywood movie like "bodyguard " would look better. But ofcourse "cookout " has never crossed the eyes of many indians before. Its only "Inception" , "Batman" and "LOTR" . Before winding off ... I would just ask the bollywood audience , did u all not watch dhoom1 even after 100s of people telling you its a remake of oceans 11?? And you still loved dhoom ? And you still are waiting for the releaze of dhoom3? Arent you? ;) Well that explains it all . U.P has to have bhojpuri cinema , south has to have tollywood, punjab has to have their own "well done jatta" and so U.S. Has hollyood and we indians have bollywood . Catering to the taste of their own respective audiences . Neither Bollywood is fully shitty nor hollywood is fully awsome.
