What careers make the most money per year?

Career advice for a naive 18 year old Indian who just wants money to enjoy life and fulfill all her parents dreams.WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  • I'm an 18 year old and expecting my class 12 results by the end of this month. I studied pcm with computers but i want to work in the finance, accounts, management and economics field. I'm good with programming, love maths and would like to work with people but i don't have a plan i.e. i don't know what courses would be beneficial, what careers have good prospects (demand and salary). I have to have some answers for myself and my parents. Help make someone's life (btw career isn't the focal point of my life but i want to have enough money so that i can concentrate on what really matters in life)

  • Answer:

I don't know what's your status with engineering entrances is, but you could try this: Get admission into BITS Dual-Degree Programme With MSc. in Economics. After 1 year, U get to choose a Bachelor Degree, for which u could take CS.(This takes some minimal effort during first year when everyone else is taking li8 after all the grilling of Engineering xams). This way you get to know about 2 fields in which you can make a decent amount of money on job. And it might even be possible to combine them. If u cannot get into BITS, look for other colleges which offer good education in commerce/economics/finance or CS, if that interests you. From the point of view of making money on job, Finance is an evergreen field(trading/accountancy..ur choice) and also, software industry is here to stay for quite some time. But now, take a step back and question yourself whether you will be happy to work on a job all your life just for the sake of money? I'm not saying don't try earn money, but try to do it with something that u enjoy doing, at-least on some level. You need not be very passionate about your work, but you shouldn't hate it either. At 18-years, the best thing you could do for yourself is to get into a good college, where you can develop your thoughts, creativity and personality. Having good knowledgeable and competitive people helps you raise your own level. Try to find good peers from whom you can learn a great deal of things. Money would follow, don't bother too much about it. Thanks for the A2A

If you are interested in programming, accounts, management then you can take up a course in the same lines. BCom has many different combination of courses. Say a bcom in computers and maths then go on with an MBA Post graduation. [ Please make up your mind if you want to do an engineering, as the portion for a CSE/IT in engineering is pretty much the same as that of a BCom graduate. BCom finishes in 3 years unlike engineering which takes 4 years. So this way you'll end up with a good job sooner than your engineering counterparts provided you have good grades and pass out from a good reputed college ] Else you could do a BBA then an MBA to directly move into management without much delay. Hope this gives you a new area to think about. Good luck! :)

Take up a course that stimulates your intellect ,try to develop interest in it further and chalk out your course over a longer period in future. Stay focused and on the sidelines enjoy yourself. All the best ahead. Cheers! :)

Thanks forA2A Anon Instead of giving career advice, I would like to mention that its not money what really matters in life.... And as per advice, since you are good in programming I think computer science engineering would be a cool option for you.. Moreover, your other interests might help you to get a job in consultancy, finance companies... If you are not interested in engineering, then other good options for you are courses like B. Sc. Computer Science, B.A. economics, etc... You also have an option to go for MBA later in either case.....
