How to remove path of my command line?

Why does my Windows command line "path" environmental variable have directories not specified in the GUI version of the Windows environmental variable "path" (my computer/properties/advanced/environment variables/path)?

  • When I go to my command prompt and type path, I see directories not visible in the GUI PATH section of Windows; why is this?

  • Answer:

the CMD prompt path statement is a compilation of both the USER variables path and SYSTEM variables path. using the same steps you provided yourself, navigate back to the ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES property sheet, then scan downwards to the box closest to the OK button. in that box, which houses the System Variables, scroll down just a bit and you will see a second path entry. if you compare your CMD path to both the User variable and System variable paths you'll see the match for which you're looking.
