Can I get a 80% salary hike in India?
-
I have been giving many interviews for past weeks, and my current salary is less as per what others get with same experience and Qualification. I am a software developer. And I have managed to crack all the interviews in which I sat till now. I have been studying algorithims and Java for quite some time now and am quite fluent in java mathematics algorithms and puzzles. Still I get this strange answer from recruiters that they cant give me more than 40% hike. They can hire a person for the same post Senior Software Developer and give him the salary say 14-18Lpa. But since my current salary +40% is less than 14Lpa.Then will pay me less and actually give me the same designation!! I dont like bargaining with HR guys or VP of xyz company. And get told that this is the market standard. If there was actually some market standard the salaries should have been standardized to begin with. I am not being greedy it is just that my current employer has underpaid me and I have the relevant knowledge and years of experience(on the basis of which I crack their interviews in first place), hence I demand a equal salary bracket wrt my peers with whom I will be working. What is wrong with HR's and startups in general in India,If you guys cant pay well dont ask super smart questions which even your developers cant discuss with candidates after interviews!! P.S. This is strictly wrt Indian scenario. People who have not been to India or ever tried to get a job or worked in India please DONT share your views.

Answer:
Become a entrepreneur develop your ventures and products and at ripe time exit by selling to a larger fish, even this endeavor takes more than 6-10 years you will get more than 70% annualized return on your investment of time and money, that's your way to glory, finding an employer to give that kinda of hike year after year, for an increasingly commoditized field is difficult

Hi, Though I have only a couple of years of experience under my belt, I have seen software developers and design engineers get hired at 90-100% hike in salary. Only thing, the company was in desperate need of the resource (say, a client is pressuring the company for a resource with the specified qualifications) I believe it's not that there is a market dictated rule or anything of the sort, though there probably is an organizational specific rule, as the HR or VP or hiring manager will be answerable to the company as to why he has offered such a hike. It all boils down to the Cost to Company factor. If the company is desperate enough though, they may ignore their own rule of 'percentage of hike' to be offered.

I work in HR for a MNC in Bangalore. I would say don't focus on what others are saying they are earning. You don't know what has gone on in their interview or performance review from the company perspective, leading to their current CTC. Focus on YOU and YOU only!!! If you are as good as you say you are, then back it up at the interview and you will get what you get the CTC you desire if you are truly that good, because the employer will want to make an attractive offer to you. To person who said "3) Tell them clearly that you won't be able to work with peers who might be less productive than you and who earn more salary than you." - this company you are joining doesn't even know your productivity and you haven't even started yet and is taking a risk by taking you on - do you understand how incredibly arrogant this makes you sound?

The same thing happened to me. You have below options 1) Ask HR about their company's salary standards. 2) Ask them whether they offer salary based on employee's skill or current CTC 3) Tell them clearly that you won't be able to work with peers who might be less productive than you and who earn more salary than you. ->To Anonymous: this company you are joining doesn't even know your productivity and you haven't even started yet and is taking a risk by taking you on - do you understand how incredibly arrogant this makes you sound? This might sound arrogant. Employers cannot judge an employee's productivity in 1 or 2 days of interview and hence. they mention we cannot offer more than a specific threshold and they specify their company's policy. An employer cannot even know who is more productive when more than one employee is working in a project unless they do close tracking on each employee's tasks every hour. Though the employee, in the interview showcase their talent in the form of total experience, current CTC, forums. communities, open source projects, etc., some of the employers still quote their de facto salary standard. But, most of the employees end up joining these companies with less salary anticipating that their salary will be revised soon based their performance and the hike the employers offer would never meet the employees expectation and hence, the employees would start looking for alternative options. It is better to join a firm who provide proper hike before joining the firm rather ending up in the loop of switching firms for hikes. 4) Ask them that if you accept the offer, after how many months, your salary will be normalised. 5) Keep the offer and try negotiating with other companies. a) If you accept the offer, you can calculate your working hours based on what you are being offered because employers do business with employees and you don't have to get scared with any of them. During recession times, if there is no business, firing will happen at a fast pace than hiring without mercy. Employees with less salary and more productivity will face less risk during recession. b) Spend the remaining time building your professional experience (part-time, freelancing, products, technology upgrades). After few months, you don't have to depend on employers. I have accepted the offer because no other employer was able to offer more than this and I have calculated my working hours.

It depends on your skills and the industry. If you have the hottest skills (Like UI Developers currently) of the industry, then you can get up to 200% hike in best case. Though it may sounds strange to you, it is true. If you have depth in the hot skills then companies can pay you on your demand. All the best!!!
