Why do apps requiring web access not work properly on Vodafone data plans?

• I am using a Micromax A110 phone, running ICS. I tried several of data plans from Vodafone on it. However the problem I mention below has persisted: When using Vodafone data plans, many of the apps on my Android that require internet connection do not function properly. Examples: Gmail and facebook are supposed to push notifications instantly (for a reasonable meaning of "instantly"). With Vodafone data plans, they update and fetch data only when you access the app explicitly. Whatsapp doesn't fetch or send messages. Google+ doesn't upload clicked pictures in background. Apps do not update automatically. Basically the processes that need constant web access and/or run in background do not seem to work properly. Curiously, tweetdeck, an app that shares the same properties, works just fine. When I enter some wi-fi or switch on some Aircel data plan, all of the above mentioned issues go away and apps work as expected. So, where does the problem lie? My phone and the way it handles background/web-y processes. Vodafone data plans configurations. Somewhere else. And what is the solution? Thanks.

  Was facing a similar problem. The issue was with the gprs settings in my android phone. Vodafone does not provide automatic settings for my lenovo p700i ( at least that's what the vodafone customer care ivr tells when I call 111 ) So, instead of talking to a customer care representative I thought I will try some configuration which will be available in internet. So, after trying out different configuration settings which were available for access point names, finally this below mentioned one worked. P Go to settings --> more --> mobile networks --> access point names . Now press menu to see an option to set a new APN and press on that. In the new page provide these entries - 1. APN Name - vodafone_connect ( or any name you want ) 2. APN - www 3. APN type - default. Leave all other fields as it is . Like, Proxy - not set Port - not set Username - not set Password - not set Server - not set MMSC - not set MMS Proxy - not set MMS port - not set Authentication type - not set APN protocol - IPV4 APN enable - enabled Bearer - unspecified. After creating the new APN with the above setting save the same and select the newly created APN via the radio button. Restart the phone if required. All apps accessing web should work fine now. P.S - Of course this is assuming you have enabled 3G for your number from vodafone. Else, message ACT VL to 111.
