What job openings exist in Silicon Valley for computer scientists (as opposed to software engineers)?

• Sure there is a fair amount of overlap, and given enough training a computer scientist can undertake a software engineering job, but I'm talking about jobs that require a more exploratory approach - maybe research.

  The problems facing most companies today are how to deal with large amounts of data and make sense out of them so they can be better used. I believe job openings exists in the following CS fields, and not necessarily from just programming point of view, but programming will likely be needed to implement the science: efficient knowledge mining from petabytes of data extremely fast video transfer/streaming -- think Netflix on steroids communication protocols that can be faster, more robust on existing hardware infrastructure video and image analysis to better identify human faces
